Aherne, Thomas Joseph

Thomas Joseph Aherne was born in Montreal, Quebec on 22 January 1958 to Michael and Margaret Aherne. He had five siblings: Mary, Breeda, James, Kathleen, and Margaret. His passions in life were learning, teamwork, taking on challenges, and teaching others. His pursuit of those passions led to a 21-year long career in the Canadian Military, where he served in the Royal Canadian Regiment, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) and the Canadian Airborne Regiment. He earned many achievements, awards, and honours. In 1984, he completed qualifications to become a course instructor. His leadership qualities and mastery of many military skills led to his appointment to the elite units Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) and Joint Task Force 2 (JTF-2). After he retired from the Canadian Armed Forces with the rank of Warrant Officer in 1997, he started his own electrical contracting business based in Calgary, Alberta. He was previously married to Pamela Jill Plummer. He later married Maureen McKee. He died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 59 on 18 October 2017.

Ahlf, Marguerite

Marguerite Ahlf (Marguerite Grasby) was born in Pibroch. Alberta and raised on a homestead near Westlock, Alberta. She completed her high school education and graduated from Alberta College in 1939 and continued to live in Edmonton until she married Elmer Ahlf of Edson. She moved to Edson in 1947 and had 4 sons, Charles, Douglas, Ken and John. She was involved in many community activities such as scouting and the United Church. In 1961 she did the research on the material used to produce the musical written for Edson's 50th Anniversary "Look Behind You Neighbour". She also started to work as a volunteer in the library in 1961, and took a library technician course partly through correspondence. In 1971 she became head librarian at the Edson Public Library. She was instrumental in developing the Edson Archives and was also involved in the original project to have have small town Alberta newspapers microfilmed. She retired as head librarian in 1983. In 1986, for Edson's 75th Anniversary she wrote Edson's only published history "Edson 75 Years". Marguerite Ahlf still lives in the Town of Edson, in 1997. Marguerite Ahlf passed away on July 26th, 2009, in Edson, Alberta.

Aho, Aaro, 1925-1977

Dr. Aaro E. Aho was a prominent geological engineer and mining executive who explored the Yukon for mineral deposits from 1944 to 1960. He was born in Ladysmith, B.C. on June 25, 1925. He graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1949 and received his Ph D from the University of California at Berkeley in 1954. He was the exploration manager for White Pass and Yukon Corporation and later began an independent consulting business. In 1964, Aho formed Dynasty Explorations and headed the exploration team that discovered the large Anvil lead-zinc mine in Faro, Yukon in 1965. He discovered many other large mineral deposits in the Yukon and other parts of the world, including the Sierra Gorda copper-molybdenum deposit in northern Chile. Aaro Aho's wife's name was Sylvia. He died in a farming accident in Ladysmith, B.C. on May 27, 1977.

Ahrens, Arthur Christian

Dentist, 1904-1985. Dr. Ahrens was a graduate in dentistry from the University of Alberta (DDS, 1927) and Northwestern University (1940). He served in the Canadian Dental Corps and was an active member of the Canadian Dental Association and the Alberta Dental Association. He was active in visits to rural Alberta schools, teaching dental hygiene to children and their parents.

Ainlay, Harry

Harry Ainlay was born in Brussels, Ontario in 1887. After earning a teacher’s certificate, he came to Alberta in 1907, spending time around Stavely before moving to Edmonton in 1912. After several years in real estate, Harry Ainlay returned to teaching in 1920, working at Queen Alexandra High School, Garneau High School, and Strathcona High School.

Harry Ainlay first ran for office as an Alderman in 1930, but was defeated. He was first elected as an Alderman in 1931 for a two year term. He was re-elected in 1933, but lost in the 1935 election. He ran for mayor in 1935, 1936, and 1937, but was defeated each time. He returned to municipal politics, and won a seat as an Alderman in 1941 and again in 1943. Halfway through his term as Alderman he stepped down and ran for Mayor in the 1945 election. He won, and served as Mayor until 1949.

Apart from municipal politics, Harry Ainlay ran a number of unsuccessful Provincial campaigns in both Alberta and British Columbia, under the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation. He was also involved in the Yellowhead Route Association in the 1940s and 1950s.

Due to health concerns, Harry Ainlay left Edmonton and moved to British Columbia. He passed away in Haney, British Columbia in 1970.

Ainslie (family)

Robert Ainslie, 1885-1961, was born in England and later moved to British Columbia. He served in the Navy during the First World War as a radio operator and afterwards became a radio inspector for the federal government in Calgary, Alberta. Ainslie was an avid golfer and was active in several golfing organizations including the Alberta Golf Association. He and his wife Edith, ?-1988, had two daughters, Annette Helen (Macdougall), 1929-2004, and Alice L., ?-1964. Alice worked for many years for Canada Customs. Annette was a secretary at the Alberta Wheat Pool and Texasgulf Sulphur and was a member of the Desk and Derrick Club and Canadian Youth Hostelling Association. Annette married John Finley Macdougall, ?-2006, a geologist for Texasgulf Sulphur, in 1964.

Air Cadet League of Canada. No. 15 (Medicine Hat)

The No. 15 (Medicine Hat) Air Cadets of Canada received certification from the Air Cadet League of Canada on September 28, 1941. Any boy under the age of 18, out of school and working was invited to join. Close to 100 boys took the Oath of Allegiance at Alexander High School in October 1941. The new recruits would receive their instruction from members of the Royal Air Force. The Air Cadets are still active in the Medicine Hat community; they hold meetings at the Armory at 120 Cuyler Rd SE.
