Westholm School District No. 1207 (Penhold, Alta.)

Westholm School District No. 1207 was organized shortly before the province of Alberta was formed in 1905. The one-room Westholm School was built near Penhold in that year. The school continued to operate until 1954; thereafter, students from the district were transported by bus to classes in Penhold, and later, Innisfail. The school building was then converted into a community hall

Wells, Ernest R.

Ernest Robert Wells, 1906-1952, was born in Toronto, Ontario and moved to Red Deer, Alberta in 1910. In his youth, he was active in the Christian boys' organization Tuxis. He was a sports reporter for the Red Deer Advocate from about 1925 until his death. He was a supporter of amateur tennis, hockey, and baseball, and was coach and general manager of the Amazons, a highly acclaimed women's hockey team. He was an active member of the Alberta Natural History Society and an amateur photographer. He married Marion Stephenson in 1932, and they had three children, Carol, Douglas, and William

Wates, Gerry

Gerald Charles Percy Wates, 1906-1983, was born at Rimbey, Alberta. In 1923 he moved to Edmonton, where he worked as a mechanic. In 1945 he moved to Red Deer, where he became Service Manager for Standard Motors. He became Regional Service Manager for Studebaker Canada, based in Vancouver, but retired to Red Deer in 1965. He was an active member of Gaetz Memorial United Church. He married Elizabeth "Elsie" and they had two daughters, Doreen (MacDonald) and Jean (Knopp)

Waska-Sues (Red Deer, Alta.)

In 1959 a group of women meet in Red Deer to discuss the creation of a women's barbershop chorus. In 1960, the Parkland Deers were accepted as a chapter of the American-based Sweet Adelines, Inc. Three years later a large majority of the Red Deer chapter resigned in protest over the "whites only" policy of Sweet Adelines, Inc. In 1963 the dissidents meet and created the Waska-Sues Harmony Chorus Society. The society was incorporated in 1964 as The Waska-Sues. The name of the society is based on the name of a creek passing through the city of Red Deer. The society maintained the four-part harmony style of barbershop singing for a period before switching to three-part harmony and a broader musical selection. After a decline in membership the society disbanded in 1981

Waskasoo Museum Foundation

The Waskasoo Museum Foundation was founded with the purpose to accept financial gifts and bequests and to be a source of extraordinary financial assistance to the Red Deer Museum. The Foundation supported research activities, provided bursaries for students, and assisted with the cost of special events. The Foundation also evaluated requests for money from the Red Deer Heritage Fund. The funding to start the Foundation came from $50,000 in excess funds from the campaign to build the Museum building. It also
acquired funding from grants and donations. The Foundation had up to 9 Directors serving 3 year terms. There was no general membership.

Waskasoo Environmental Education Society

The Waskasoo Environmental Education Society was founded as a registered non-profit charity on January 1, 2008. It provides the programming and administrative oversight for The Kerry Wood Nature Centre, Fort Normandeau, and the Waskasoo Park Interpretive Program in Red Deer, Alberta. It is partially funded by the City of Red Deer and through fundraising efforts.

Waskasoo Camera Club

The Waskasoo Camera Club was established in 1955. Initially it was called the Red Deer Color Photo Club, but soon became the Waskasoo Branch of the Color Photographers Association of Canada. Its first executive consisted of: Charlie Kerr, president; George Cox, vice-president; and Frances Dobinson, secretary. In August 1969, the name was changed to Waskasoo Camera Club. The club was affiliated with several other photographic groups including the Prairie Region-Photographic Arts, the National Association of Photographic Arts, and the Photographic Society of America allowing it access to resources and competitions. The club held its own shows and competitions and awarded several trophies, including the 'Crossley Cup' (later called the 'Parkland Trophy'), the 'Squire Nelson Trophy', and the 'Photostory Trophy'. The club also handed out a 'Photographer of the Year Award'. It participated in various local and regional events throughout the prairie provinces. The club folded 6 May 1991.

Wardle, Sydney

Sydney Wardle,1885-1971, lived in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, and later farmed in the Veteran and Prevo districts of Alberta. In 1916 he married his wife Emma, 1889-1971, and they had one child, Marjorie Cook. In 1936 he became the United Grain Growers elevator agent in Penhold, Alberta. After his retirement he and his wife moved to Sylvan Lake, Alberta. Sydney was an avid amateur photographer who won prizes in several newspaper photograph contests. He died in Edmonton, Alberta
