Zelmer, A.C. Lynn

Adam Charles (A.C.) Lynn Zelmer was born March 19, 1943 in Calgary, Alberta; he was the son of Hubert Adam and Winona Ella (May) Zelmer. He completed his Bachelor of Education at the University of Alberta in 1965 and a Master of Science degree from Stout State University in Wisconsin in 1969. He has found employment as a photographer, a media producer, a trainer, a teacher, an academic and a consultant in Canada and Australia as well as other countries. He has developed a variety of training resources and has been involved in the application of technology to teaching and training. On December 16, 1969, Lynn married Amy Mary Elliott; they had one daughter, Jennifer Lynne Zelmer, born August 11, 1972. In 1988, Lynn and wife Amy moved to Australia. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Queensland in 1994. Though retired, Lynn continued to supervise postgraduate students as well as develop and manage a number of community and organizational websites and other multimedia projects. Amy Mary Elliott was born December 20, 1935 in Halifax, Nova Scotia; she was the daughter of George T. and Annie Caroline (Smart) Elliott. In 1973, Amy earned her Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in education administration and communications from Michigan State University. From 1976 to 1988, she was a professor in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Alberta. In 1988, the Zelmers moved to Australia where Amy was a professor in the Faculty of Health Science at Central Queensland University in Rockhampton, Australia until 1996; after February 1996, she has been an honorary professor with the Faculty.

Zeller, Roy

Roy Zeller, [ca. 1895-1947], moved from Kitchener, Ontario to Alberta between 1914 and 1918. He married Lucille, 1896-1982, and they established a garage in Exshaw, Alberta about 1926. During the summers Lucille ran the Bowfort Service Station and tea room nine miles east of Exshaw. In 1943 or 1944 they retired to the New Westminster area, BC.

Zella School District No. 1078

The Zella School District Number No. 1078 was formed September 22, 1904 in the Town of Didsbury, Alberta at Section 6, Township 32, Range 3, West of the 5th Meridian (6-32-3-W5). The school operated until 1954. In April 1955 the Minister of Education approved the sale of the Zella school building to the Zella Community Association; Zella School became the Zella Community Centre.

Zehren, Dorothy H.

Dorothy H. Heald was born in Chislehurst, Kent, England on May 29, 1901 to Alice and Ernest (Ernie) Heald. The family immigrated to Orangeville, Ontario in 1904 and arrived in Medicine Hat in 1907. Mr. Heald, a gardener by trade, became Parks Superintendent and was instrumental in creating Riverside Park. Upon his return from service in the war overseas, Ernie purchased a farm along the South Saskatchewan River. He later served on City Council as Alderman. Dorothy attended Alexandra High School to Grade 10 and then continued at Garbutt's Business College. She worked as a secretary for Black's Hardware and as teller for the Bank of Commerce before she married Paul Edward Zehren of Milwaulkee on December 28, 1926. The couple moved to Youngstown, Alberta and lived there until returning to Medicine Hat in 1931. They had one son, David, who died of polio on the first day of school in 1949. Paul started up his own business, Zehren's Grocery, on Aberdeen Street in 1946. He suffered a stroke and passed away a few years later in 1967. Dorothy became an agent for Manufacturer's Life Insurance and served the company for approximately 10 years. She was very active in church activities being past president of the C.W.L. at St. Patrick's Church. Dorothy Zehren passed away on January 14, 1992 at age 90.

Zaychuk Family

Stephen Zaychuk was born in Bruzuchowicze, Poland on February 2, 1908 of Ukrainian parents. The family interrupted Stephen's engineering education in 1927 and emigrated to Canada. Stephen finally settled in the Town of Beverly, Alberta in 1934 and married Mary Kobewka on January 26, 1935. Together they had two sons, David and Allan. Stephen and Mary owned and ran the market farm known locally as Zaychuk Berry Farm, and in 1954 built and ran a multi-cabin Auto-Court motel. In 1955 Stephen was first elected to the Beverly Town Council serving there until 1961 when Beverly officially amalgamated with Edmonton. During his terms as a Beverly Councillor he sat on the Police Commission, attended the Union of Alberta Municipalities Convention, attended the first meeting of the Provisional Committee for the Homes for the Aged, and on June 16, 1960 attended the Official Opening of the Edmonton International Airport . In 1961 Stephen and his son David, who had studied Chemical Engineering at the University of Alberta, became partners in the Zaychuk Nursery, Berry and Vegetable Farms Ltd. Mary was involved with the Beverly Home and School Association, was a prize winner at the food exhibits of the Edmonton Exhibition, took specialized food preparation classes at Northern Alberta Institute of Technology and travelled in her later years. The Zaychuks were innovators being the first to commercially grow strawberries and raspberries and later introduced the carrot combine which improved the harvest of root vegetables, and David kept cattle to provide fertilizer and use up excess vegetable feed. Stephen was a member of the Alberta Fresh Vegetable Growers Association, the Canadian and Western Canadian Societies of Horticulture, the Alberta Nursery Trades Association, the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce, and the St. John's Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Stephen died tragically on April 4, 1973 at age 65 in a car accident in B.C. The younger son Allan died March 10, 1985 and Mary died August 10, 1994. David continues to run the Zaychuk family enterprise on 400 acres north of Edmonton.

Zawale School District No. 1074

Named after a village in Halchyna, Ukraine, Zawale School District No. 1074 was established in 1904 at Section 33, Township 55, Range 17, West of the 4th Meridian (33-55-17-W4). The School closed in 1950 and the children bussed to Andrew to attend school.
