Nowlan, Alden, 1933-1983.

Canadian poet, author, playwright and journalist. Born January 25, 1933 in Windsor, Nova Scotia. Died June 27, 1983 in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Aldersyde Mutual Telephone Company

The Aldersyde Mutual Telephone Company was incorporated on June 14, 1935 to take over the Alberta Government Telephones' rural service in the Aldersyde area. As an economy measure at this time, AGT turned over most of its rural lines to locally-owned companies, while retaining control over standards of maintenance and construction. In August 1972 AGT reintegrated the company's subscribers into the main telephone system.

Howard, Alec

Alec Howard was born in England in 1922. He came to the Eastend district with his parents in 1924. He attended both the Eastend and South Fork schools. In 1950, Alec married Marye Moodie, who at the time, was nursing in Maple Creek. They lived on the Pollock ranch for one year before moving to the Anglican rectory in Eastend for two years. From there they moved to Art Hall's homestead, where they remained for one year before moving to the Major Moodie ranch in the Klintonel district in 1957 where Alec farmed land and raised cattle. In 1964, they moved into Eastend where they still live. Marye has worked part-time at the Eastend hospital since 1951. Alec and Marye have three children: Alan Sydney Alec, born August 23, 1951, is a computer science constultant. Maureen Rosalind Kathleen (Renee), born October 1, 1953, is a registered nurse, she married Kerresin George in 1979. Susan Norma Olive, born May 15, 1958 is ranching on the old Pollock ranch where her grandfathers, Sid Howard and "Tib" Moodie worked in the early years. She is also a nurse's aide at the Eastend Hospital.

Calliou, Alex

Alexander Montrose Calliou (also known as Callihoo) was born to Adolphus Callihoo (1885-1967) and Christine Breland on July 29, 1925. He had six siblings, William, Clara, David, Napoleon, Irene and Elsie. He married Beatrice Gladys and together they had three children, Sharilyn, Alexis and Frederick. Beginning in 1963, Alexander Calliou worked as a caretaker for the Province of Alberta Department of Public Works, and in 1976 he was transferred to the Provincial Museum of Alberta where he worked as a museum aide until his retirement in 1986. He was also a member of the International Brotherhood of Pulp, Sulphite and Paper Mill Workers, Local 433 in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Cowan, Alex

Alex Cowan graduated from the University of Toronto in Theology and was ordained in 1943 at Westminster-Central United Church. Alex's first position moved him and his wife, Elvin, to Rowley Alberta, near Drumheller. For several years Alex Cowan lead services at Rowley, Rumsey, Big Valley, and Lakeview churches. Following this position, in [1945], the Cowan's returned and settled in Ontario.

Dewar, Alex

Alexander "Alex" Dewar lived in Calgary, Alberta in the late 1950s and early 1960s where he was a cartoonist for the Calgary Albertan newspaper. He and his wife Patricia Mary moved to Vancouver about 1968 and lived there until 1971.

Cameron, Alex G.

Alex G. Cameron was the son of Maria Hannah Cross. Following her husband's death, Maria married Harry Cross; Harry worked as a letter carrier from the late 1910s until retiring in about 1946 or 1947. Harry died September 18, 1960.

Webster, Alex

Alexander Webster, 1881- , was born in Perthshire, Scotland and came to Canada in 1905. His wife, Mrs. A. Webster, ?-1938, daughter Isobel (Simpson), and son Alex Jr. joined him in Fernie, British Columbia in 1906. Another son, Donald M. Webster, 1908- , was born in Fernie. The family later moved to Calgary, Alberta and in 1914 bought a farm near Airdrie. They farmed at Lacombe, 1918-1922, then returned to the Airdrie property. They were well-known for their livestock, especially Clydesdale horses, and Shorthorn cattle, and later Yorkshire hogs. They received many awards for their Clydesdales.
