Reid, Laura (Evans)

Painter, 1883-1951. A former fashion designer, Laura (Evans) Reid, wife of pioneer Alberta doctor R.M. Reid, began painting after the age of 50. In association with the Department of Extension, she was supervisor of the Vegreville Community Art School. Her watercolours have been exhibited throughout Canada, including the Universityþs Ring House Gallery, which holds the major collection of her paintings.

Rempel, Sharon

Agronomist, agricultural historian. After receiving a B.Sc. from the University of Alberta, Sharon Rempel received her M.A. in Conservation Studies, 'Historic Gardens and Landscapes' option from the Department of Archaeology, Institute of Advanced Architectural Studies at the University of York, England. She also attended a 10-day course in Heritage Gardens from the University of Victoria, in Victoria, British Columbia. Since 1989, Ms. Rempel has operated Sharon Rempel and Associates, a consulting firm that offers heritage garden research and restoration services. Ms. Rempel's clients have included Craigflower Farm, Hudson Bay site, Victoria (1850s); the Grist Mill at Keremeos, B.C. (1880s); Fort Steele Heritage Town, Cranbrook, B.C. (1890s); Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village, Edmonton Alta. (1900s); Mennonite Heritage Village, Steinbach Manitoba (1900s); Highlands Historical Society, Edmonton, Alta. (1908); and Parks Canada, Jasper, Alberta (1920s). Ms. Rempel has also done biodiversity conservation consultation work with: The Garden Institute of Alberta; Seeds of Diversity Canada (SoDC); Canadian University Service Overseas (CUSO) in Laos, PDR; United Nations work for Canada in Rome; and The Greek Gene Bank

Richard Eaton Singers

Edmonton's premier oratorio choir, founded in 1951, was originally called the University Singers. It was renamed in memory of its founding director, Richard S. Eaton, in 1969. It has had a long association with the University of Alberta, as the Choir rehearses on campus and draws its music directors from the Department of Music. The Singers, however, have always been an entity separate from the University, drawing members from the general community and receiving funding from other sources. Directors: 1951-1967 Richard S. Ridley, Albert John

Prospector, Businessman, 1879-1938. Albert John Ridley left his parents' farm in Ridgetown, Ontario after high school to join the Klondike Gold Rush. Having journeyed west, he headed north from Vancouver in September 1899, to Skagway. Following a year of travel and periods of sedentariness, he and his two companions reached Lousetown near Dawson City in July, 1900. He remained in the Klondike until the fall of 1903. After his return to Ontario, he took up various business ventures in Canada and the United States. He finally settled in Birmingham, Alabama in 1908.

Riel Project

Under the sponsorship of the Universities of Alberta, Calgary, and Sherbrooke, the Riel Project was established to publish a critical, bilingual edition of the collected writings of Louis Riel to mark the 100th anniversary of his death. A five-volume edition was published by the University of Alberta Press in 1985. Dr. G.F.G. Stanley was the general editor of the Project. Editorial and institutional files contain materials which predate the Project.

Romanet, Louis Auguste

Fur trader, Author, 1880-1964. L.A. Romanet came to Canada from France in 1903 as an employee of the fur trading company Revillon Freres. He began his career at their Ungava post in northern Quebec. In 1916 he joined the Hudson's Bay Company as an inspector; by 1923 he was sent to Edmonton to be district manager for the Athabasca and Mackenzie River Districts and general manager of the Alberta and Arctic Transportation Company. In the latter post he had charge of all the Company's river and lake paddlewheel steamboats in the north. After he left the Company in 1930 Mr. Romanet was employed at various times as an agent for North Star Oil Company, Abasand Oils Ltd (1937-1941) and as an inspector for the Northwest Service Command during World War II.

Ross, Donald Murray

Zoologist, Marine biologist, 1914-1986. Donald M. Ross came from Cambridge University in 1961 to join the University as professor and head of the Department of Zoology. In 1964 he was named Dean of Science, a position he held until 1976. He retired as Professor Emeritus in 1979. A marine biologist, his research focused on the biological behaviour of marine animals and colour changes in fish. He was instrumental in the establishment of Bamfield Marine Research Station on Vancouver Island in 1970. His films of marine animal behaviour have been shown at universities throughout the world.

Rowan, Reta Guenever Mary

Volunteer community worker, [1895]-1983. Reta Rowan came from England to Manitoba in 1919, then to Edmonton in 1920, where her husband, William Rowan, taught at the University of Alberta. Mrs. Rowanþs interests were varied, ranging from involvement with cultural groups such as the Folk Festival Committee, to involvement with the Alberta Adult Education Society and with the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. It was, however, her work with minority groups at the civic and provincial levels that claimed most of her time between 1942 and 1967. These included the Council for Canadian Unity, the Friends of the Indians Society and the Indian Association of Alberta.

Rowan, William

Zoologist, Ornithologist, 1891-1957. Swiss-born ornithologist and naturalist William Rowan immigrated to Canada in 1919; in 1920 he became the first professor of the Department of Zoology, which he headed until his retirement in 1956. He pioneered research into avian migration patterns and studied the cyclical population fluctuations of birds and mammals through banding studies. Dr. Rowan was a strong proponent of wildlife conservation and active in fish and game associations. He was also an artist whose works were exhibited in Canada and England. His drawing of a whooping crane was selected for the design of a Canadian postage stamp.
