Kay Powell attended the Margaret Greenham Mountain School in Banff, Alberta during World War II. She started half-way through her grade 9 year. Several girls from Victoria, British Columbia were sent to the Margaret Greenham Mountain School during this period. Many of the girls' fathers, having served in World War I, feared the bombing of Victoria by the Japanese and sent their daughters to the nearest boarding school.

Putnam has written about Glacier House, the centre of alpinism in the Selkirks during the 1880s-1900s and about Swiss guides. He has also co-authored several climbing guides to the mountain regions of western Canada.
