Pickering (family)

Robert Pickering (1877-1951) was born and educated in Cheshire, England. He served as a sapper in the Second South African War. In 1911, he and his first wife, Mabel Southall Pickering (1891-1921) immigrated to Canada. They farmed in the Durham district near Sylvan Lake, Alberta. The couple had six children: William (1912-1993), John (1913-1990), Henry (1915-1990), Arthur (?-post 2002), Dorothy (1919-1923), and Robert (1921). In 1926, Robert married Elizabeth Irwin, formerly of London, Ontario. They had two children: Norman (1927-2002), and Robert Jr. (1931-1998). Robert Sr. was active in the farm movement and acted as secretary-treasurer for the Norma and Durham school district.

Pine Lake No. 1 School District No. 2960 (Alta.)

Pine Lake School District No. 2960 was founded in 1914, and the one-room Pine Lake School was built at the northwest end of Pine Lake, near Red Deer, Alberta. In 1939 the school district was divided into two, and the original Pine Lake School became known as Pine Lake No. 1 School. The school closed in 1957

William Piper, 1841-1919, with his sons Frank E. Piper, 1873-1963 and William M. Piper, 1876-1901, settled in the Red Deer, N.W.T. district in 1891 and established a brick making business there in 1892. The firm's name changed as partners were brought in to capitalize the business: William Piper & Sons (1891-1898), Piper & Co. (1898-1904), and The Piper Brick and Tile Co. (1904-1908). The latter business went bankrupt, but William and Frank started it up again as a partnership, Piper and Son. William retired in 1911, and Frank went into partnership with E. R. Hill as Piper and Co. During this time the business was also known as the Piper Brick Co. Around 1920 Joseph Ardell replaced Hill in the partnership. The firm ceased manufacturing bricks in the early 1920s

Piper Creek Elementary School (Red Deer, Alta.)

South Hill School was established in Red Deer Public School District No. 104 in 1953 in the South Hill district of Red Deer, Alberta. It was initially a two-room primary school, but was enlarged in 1961 and in 1972. In 1977 it was renamed Piper Creek Elementary School. Due to declining enrolments, the school was closed in 1998. The school building was then turned over to the North Central Francophone Education Region, which reopened it as École la Prairie in 1999

Pleasant Valley School District No. 329 (Innisfail, Alta.)

Pleasant Valley School District No. 329 was founded in 1892 in the Knee Hill Valley district east of Innisfail, Alberta. The one-room school was built sometime before 1901 at NW 6-35-26 W4. In 1907 a new school was built at NE 1-35-27 W4. In 1955 this school building was replaced with a disused school that was moved from the Grassy Plains School District. In 1962 the school was closed, but the building continued to be used as Knee Hill Valley United Church. In 1981 a reunion of the former students and teachers was held

Poplar Ridge School District No. 772

The Poplar Ridge School District No. 772 was established in 1903. Miss Connie L. Stephenson was the first teacher, instructing close to 30 students. Attendance in the early years ranged from a low of 29 in 1929, to a high of 44 in 1935. In 1943 the old school was moved off the school yard and replaced with a new two-room school. The last teacher hired at Poplar Ridge School was Mr. Sam Davidson, who moved from Eureka Valley S.D. near Lacombe, Alberta to Poplar Ridge in 1951. In 1959, with shrinking attendance ratepayers decided, by a vote of 14 in favour to 4 opposed, to close the school. In 1961, residents of Poplar Ridge purchased the school for $750.00 and it became a community center.
