Aitkens, Grace Le Roy.

Canadian poet. G.L. Aitkens, née Chadderdon, born in Lexington, Minnesota in 1891. Emigrated to Alberta in 1914. Poetry published in periodicals and/or anthologies in the United States, England, Belgium and Italy and in poetry collection Ponderings in print.

Alberta. Royal Commission on Education.

In 1957, the Government of the Province of Alberta appointed a Royal Commission consisting of six commissioners headed by Senator Donald Cameron (1903-1989). The Commission was instructed to make a "comprehensive survey of the various phases of the elementary and secondary school system of the province with particular attention to programs of study and pupil achievement". The Commission presented its report to the Government on November 9, 1959. The report consisted of a majority presentation signed by five of the six commissioners and a minority submission signed by Commissioner John S. Cormack.

Alberta Kodály Association

One of the official branches of the Kodály Society of Canada, the Alberta Kodály Association held its founding meeting on January 14, 1983. The Association is a bilingual organization of music educators open to all individuals and groups interested in Kodály-inspired music education.

Alberta Society of Artists.

The Alberta Society of Artists was founded by a group of Calgary artists led by Alfred C. Leighton and incorporated in 1931. Objectives of the Society are to foster and promote the fine arts in Alberta. A.C. Leighton, the first president, was succeeded by a number of prominent Alberta artists including H.G. Glyde, Illingworth Kerr, Stan Perrot and Ken Sturdy. The Society published several issues of a newsletter Artometer in the 1930s, followed by Highlights, which began publication in the late 1940s. Highlights flourished under the editorship of Jim Nicoll, when it included original works of art and was published in limited editions of 100 issues, the average size of the membership at that time. Anderson-Wuensch, Jean, 1939-

Canadian composer and educator. Jean Anderson-Wuensch was born in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England in 1939. Educated at the University of Nottingham, University of Leeds, Royal Academy of Music (London, England) and University of Rochester. Taught music in schools in England (1961-1964), Minnesota (1964-1967) and at the University of Western Ontario (1969-). Works commissioned by the Ontario Council of Arts and Middlesex County Education Board. Compositions performed in North America and Europe.

Andrews, Stephen, 1922-1994.

Canadian artist, designer, teacher and writer Stephen Andrews was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, on May 16, 1922. Studied art at Winnipeg School of Art, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Camberwell School of Arts, London, England, privately with Martin Bloch in London, England, at the Académie Julian, Paris, France, and the Scuola del Mosaics, Ravenna, Italy. Died in Spain in 1995. Archer, Violet, 1913-2000.

Canadian composer, pianist, organist and educator Violet Archer, née Balestreri, was born in Montreal, Quebec, on April 24, 1913 and died in Ottawa, Ontario, on 21 February 2000.
