Albert H. Schwermann. DD., was born at Jefferson City, Missouri in 1891. He was ordained as a Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS) minister in 1913 and came to open the mission field around Mellowdale in the Barrhead area. He married Hilda Hinz in 1916. He was the pastor at Wetaskiwin until 1921. He served as the Alberta-British Columbia District archivist starting in 1921. He was elected first president of Concordia College (Concordia University College of Alberta) and served in that office from 1921 - 1955. As a member of the Alberta British Columbia District School board he was involved in the negotiations regarding the 1923 St. Matthews Stony Plain School closure. He also served as associate past or of St. Peter's Lutheran Edmonton from 1921 - ?. Albert Schwermann served as the editor of the LCMS news magazine for western Canada entitled the Canadian Lutheran, both the German and English edition. He was chairman of the Bellevue Community League from 1950 - 1953 and founded the Lutheran Choral Society of Edmonton in 1952. He was elected the first president of the Lutheran Church-Canada Federation in 1958 to 1964 which was organized to form a separate Canadian Lutheran church in fellowship with the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. Albert Schwermann received Coronation medals from George VI in 1937 and Elizabeth II in 1953 in recognition of his contributions to education in Canada. From 1964 - 1968 he was the archivist/historian of the Lutheran Church-Canada federation and was instrumental in founding the Lutheran Historical Institute in 1980. He received an Alberta Achievement Award in 1978 and the 1981 Good Servant medal from the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews for extraordinary service to the community. He died in 1983 at the age of 92. ;Hilda Hintz was born in Stones Prairie, Missouri in 1891. She married Albert Schwermann in 1916. She was a seamstress and made gowns for her husband and various Lutheran pastors. In the early years of Concordia College she worked with her husband and served as mother to the young students, manager of the commissary, cook and nurse. For many years she was a member of the Concordia Shower Committee and the Concordia Guild. She died in 1973.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of personal papers, letters, essays, publications and photographs of the Schwermann family, relating to congregations, the Alberta-British Columbia District, Concordia College, LCMS and LCC and individuals, students, pastors and church members. Includes photographs of events, people, buildings as well as water colours and pencil line drawings given as gifts from students.
