Name of creator
Dr. William A. Preshing was Professor Emeritus in the University of Alberta School of Business. He joined the staff of the School of Commerce at the University of Alberta in 1957 as a Case Writer and then became an Assistant Professor in the School. In 1962, he moved to the University of Calgary as an Associate Dean of the School of Commerce, as well as holding the positions of Associate Professor at the University of Calgary and Associate Director, Management Studies at the Banff Center for Continuing Education. He returned to the University of Alberta in 1966 where he held, in turn, the positions of Director of Institutional Research and Planning, Director of the Office of Community Relations, and the Associate Dean (Undergraduate Program) in the School of Business. Previous to these administrative roles, he held a dual academic appointment at the University of Alberta as a Professor in the Faculty of Extension and Adjunct Professor in the School of Business. Dr. Preshing received his B.A. and B.Ed. from the University of Alberta, his M.B.A. from the University of Western Ontario, and his Ph.D. in Marketing from the University of Illinois. Dr. Preshing has had diverse experience in both industrial sales and retail selling. He is the author of Concepts for Managerial Decisions, co-author of Concepts and Canadian Cases in Marketing, author of Business Management in Canada: An;Introduction (2nd Edition), and author of over 300 articles on marketing and management. He has held executive positions with the American Marketing Association (AMA), Sales and Marketing Executive (SME) Clubs, Canadian Mental Health Association, Calgary Exhibition and Stampede Board, Edmonton Symphony, Institute of Public Administration of Canada (IPAC), Commonwealth Games, Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), United Way, Edmonton Municipal Anniversary;Committee (Alberta '75), Alberta Art Foundation (AAF), Universade, Alberta Foundation for the Performing Arts (AFA), the World Trade Center, First Night Festival, a Director at Edmonton Northlands, and chaired the Communications Committee for the Winspear Opening Celebration Committee. He is currently President of the Friends of the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium Society, and is a past President of the Friends of the;Provincial Museum Society. He is also President of W.A. Preshing & Associates limited, Consultants. An avid jogger, Dr. Preshing has organized numerous Fun Runs: 6-49 Run (6 years), Faculty Club Fun Run (16 years), Predictor Christmas Brunch Run (12 years), and Equalizer Run (6 years). He has also organized teams for the Beat Beethoven Run, Jasper-Banff Relay, and Kananaskis 100-mile relay. He received the Golden Shoe" Award from Runners World Magazine in August 1995. He was a member of the World's;Marathon Organizing Committee (2001-2002) and has been a member of the Edmonton Festival Society Marathon Committee since 2001. Dr. Preshing is married, has three children, and five grandchildren. He was also a member of the marketing program for the 1978 Commonwealth Games.
The materials were found in the records of the University of Alberta Archives, but their Archivist, Bryan Corbett, thought it more appropriate for the City's collection mandate and transferred the records in 1992.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of the applications to and deliberations of the City's Alberta '75 Municipal Anniversary Committee about grants for suitable projects to mark the provincial anniversary in 1980.
