Biographical history
In 1979, the government of the province of Alberta began plans to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the province's entry into Confederation. Though the main celebrations were to be held in Edmonton, smaller towns and rural areas were also encouraged to plan celebrations. A committee was formed in Wetaskiwin to plan the local celebrations with former Mayor Jack Pike as the chair. In September 1980, Alberta 75th celebrations were held in Wetaskiwin over a period of 5 days and hosted a carnival, an old-time fiddlers contest, a bingo and several other activities, and culminated in a parade down main street. The committee disbanded after the celebrations; several committee members continued on to plan the City of Wetaskiwin's 75th Anniversary celebration the following year.
