Dates of Founding and/or Dissolution:;The Assessment Appeal Board was established in 1957. The Board was repealed in 1994. Functional Responsibility:;The enabling legislation for the Alberta Assessment Appeal Board was The Assessment Appeal Board Act (S.A. Chapter 24, 1957). The Alberta Assessment Appeal Board was a quazi-judicial tribunal that heard appeals and rendered decisions with respect to property valuations made to establish equitable bases for the taxing authorities within the province. The Alberta Assessment Appeal Board heard and adjudicated appeals on municipal assessments by cities, counties, improvement districts, municipal districts, school districts irrigation districts, towns and villages. The Board also heard appeals concerning equalization assessments and electric power and pipeline assessment. Predecessor and Successor Bodies:;The Assessment Commission preceded the Alberta Assessment Appeal Board. The Assessment Commission was established in 1929 to hear appeals on assessments from decisions of local municipal courts. The Assessment Commission was responsible to the Minister of Municipal Affairs. With the proclamation of the Municipal Government Act (S.A. Chapter M-26, 1994), the Alberta Assessment Appeal Board, Alberta Planning Board and the Local Authorities Board were combined to become the Municipal Government Board is responsible for the resolution of assessment and housing disputes and annexation issues arising throughout Alberta. Administrative Relationships:;The Lieutenant Governor in Council appointed the Alberta Assessment Appeal Board. Lieutenant Governor in Council designated the Chairman of the Board. Administrative Structure:;At the time of proclamation of the enabling legislation the Board was composed of three members inclusive of the chairman. Under the legislation the Board was permitted to operate as a Board or as divisions of the Board with two members forming a quorum of a division. Names of Chief Officers:;G. A. Consist of records that predate the establishment of the Alberta Assessment Appeal Board. The sous-fonds consists of two series, Judges Notebooks from 1954 to 1974 and Appeal Case Records form 1941 to 1982.
