Biographical history
The Alberta Crown Attorneys' Association (ACAA) is a non-profit society incorporated under the Societies Act in 1971. Crown attorneys are lawyers employed by the provincial goverment to prosecute criminal cases on behalf of the government. ACAA is governed by an elected executive consisting of a president, 1st and 2nd vice-presidents, a treasurer and a secretary. The association's mandate is to represent crown attorneys' interests to their employer, and to advance the education of crown attorneys. The ACAA holds educational conferences for its members twice yearly, and has been active in seeking improvements in salaries and working conditions for crown attorneys. See HISTORY database for more extensive administrative history.
Custodial history
These records were originally maintained by individual executive and committee members of the ACAA and passed from old to new executive members in some cases. They were gathered by the ACAA secretary for transfer to the archives.
Scope and content
Fonds consists of records maintained by individual executive and committee members in the course of conducting the business of the ACAA from their own places of employment. Fonds is arranged in 3 series: 1) Executive and members' manuals, minutes and incorporation documents, 2) Briefs, reports and collected reference material, and 3) Executive members' and committee chair's records. Executive members and committee chairs whose records are included here are Willard Willms, Cliff Purvis, I. Yaverbaun, E.O. (Orest) Yereniuk, Martin Elton, Gordon Falconer and Grant Nickless. Activities reflected in the records include liaison with the attorney general regarding working conditions and remuneration for crown attorneys, organization of conferences, monitoring public perceptions of crown attorneys, and other matters. Includes executive manuals, correspondence, minutes of executive meetings and annual general meetings, some committee meetings, and reports produced by the ACAA. Records of most committees established by the association are not included in this fonds, the exception being the Ways and Means Committee. The newsletter which the association distributed is also not included among the records. Fonds also includes a 1967 photograph of the inaugural meeting of crown prosecutors, prior to the establishment of the ACAA, and a photo of the hockey team. The records never formed part of a single record-keeping system.

Executive members records were selected to retain files relating to the most significant issues dealt with by the ACAA. Material not selected for permanent preservation include the following: Publications and reports of organizations other than the ACAA, including many federal government reports on the criminal justice system, and reports on wages and working conditions of crown attorneys elsewhere in the country ; files on conference organization of other organizations; routine files on the organization of the ACAA semi-annual general meetings; treasurer's records including lists of expenditures, receipt books, bank statements, etc; executive members correspondence files on various administrative matters including golf tournaments and clothing sales; and some information on Canadian Association of Crown Counsel (CACC) meetings.

Record No. 24-00-00
