Name of creator
In response to Governor General Earl Grey's desire to see provincial music festivals established in Canada, one such festival was organized, with the help of musicians Vernon Barford and Howard Stutchbury, in Edmonton, Alberta and was held May 5, 1908. It was the first regional musical festival in Canada, with one hundred musicians competing in eleven classical categories. The Edmonton committee, which organized the regional festivals, functioned independently, though there was some cooperation between similar associations in Calgary and Lethbridge. In 1917, the three adopted a constitution creating a provincial association, the Alberta Musical Festival Association, with Calgary, Edmonton and Lethbridge being Local Branches of the Association, working somewhat independently, but according to the Alberta Musical Festival Association syllabi.
Scope and content
The sous-fonds consists of the business records of the Edmonton Local Branch of the Alberta Musical Festival Association, and includes Edmonton Branch minutes, copies of Provincial Executive minutes, financial statement, copies of the Alberta Musical Festival Association constitutions, and Edmonton District Musical Festival Competition syllabi of competitions and programs of competitions and competitors.
