Biografie
Alexander Watson "Sandy" Durham, 1883-1949, was born near Bannockburn, Scotland. He completed an apprenticeship in blacksmithing. He was an award-winning bagpiper, and was also noted as a harpist, singer, Highland dancer, composer, and poet. He emigrated to Canada in 1907, and opened a blacksmithing business at Cayley, Alberta in 1909. During the First World War he served overseas as a Farrier Sergeant. During the Second World War he served as a piper with the Veterans' Guard of Canada, but was discharged due to ill health. He closed the blacksmith shop in 1942 and worked briefly in the Flight Training Schools in the High River and Vulcan area. He never married.
Geschiedenis beheer
The fonds came into the possession of Hugh D. Johnson of Cayley, who was Durham's friend and possibly executor of his estate. It was passed on to Dennis Dunn, Johnson's son-in-law and heir.
Bereik en inhoud
The fonds consists of Durham's blacksmith shop day book (1935-1942), agreement for purchase of blacksmithing tools and stock (1933), documents regarding employment and transfer of funds from his father's estate (1942-1945), and financial statement of his estate (1950).
