Biographical history

Alfred W. Farmilo was born in 1885 in Nottingham, England. He immigrated to Canada in 1906 and finally settled in Edmonton, Alberta in 1908. He worked as a stonemason in Edmonton and gradually became involved with the Trade Union movement. Farmilo was associated with the Edmonton Trades and Labour Council from 1911 to ca. 1946, acting in the capacity of secretary and president, and was a general secretary for the Alberta Civil Service Association for many years. He also served as president, secretary, and organizer of the Alberta Federation of Labour from 1913-1944, and represented Alberta in the American Federation of Labour. Farmilo was appointed as labour representative on the Alberta Workman's Compensation Board from 1941-1955 and in 1948 he was appointed to the executive committee of the International Association of Industrial Accident Boards and Commissions. He was awarded the Member of the British Empire title for his labour reorganization activities to restore bombed cities in Europe during World War II. Within his community, Farmilo served as a councilor for the City of Edmonton from 1926-1930 and was a member of the Royal Alexandra Hospital Board, the Edmonton Advisory Housing Commission, the Salvation Army Advisory Board, and the Masons. Farmilo died on December 12, 1965, survived by his wife Ada and two sons Charles George and Alfred William.

Custodial history

Mr. A.W. Farmilo, a son of Alfred W. Farmilo, deposited these records in the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 1972.

Scope and content

Fonds consists of the personal records of Alfred W. Farmilo, mainly related to his involvement in various labour organizations, official boards, and associations, and includes minutes, correspondence, submissions, speeches, reference material, certificates, receipts, newspaper clippings, financial records, member lists, souvenirs, statistics, reports, pamphlets, posters, articles, scrapbooks, caricatures, journals, and photographs. The fonds has been arranged into the following series: Official Boards and Associations; Personal Papers; Speeches; Newspaper Clippings; Other; Reference Materials; Photographs.
