Gordon Hollis Allen was born in Chesterton, New York on May 28, 1901 and came to Canada as a boy. He graduated from the University of Alberta with an LL.B. in 1923 and articled with the Calgary firm of Taylor and Moffat. He was admitted to the bar in 1923 and practiced law with various firms until his appointment to the the Supreme Court of Alberta Appellate Division in 1966. He was named King's Counsel in 1945 and was president of the Law Society of Alberta from 1959 to 1961. He retired in 1978.
