Administrative history
The Alliance française was founded in Paris, France in 1883, originally to disseminate the French language abroad, in particular in the French colonies. The Alliance française d'Edmonton was founded in 1947 by Paulette Crévolin. The 1966 constitution of the Alliance française d'Edmonton outlined its goals as the propagation of the French language within Edmonton and the surrounding areas and the congregation of the French and the friends of France to maintain and develop an appreciation of French language and thought. The Alliance française of Edmonton was incorporated under the Societies Act on September 29, 1975 to propagate the French language and culture and to unite those who wished to participate in that objective. It is administered by an elected Executive Board lead by a president and it has only one employe, the Executive Director. A non-profit organization, the Alliance française d'Edmonton continues to offer language classes and a variety of cultural activities, like lunches, talks, exhibits, workshops and outings. It also hosts a French library including CDs and DVDs.
