Biographical history
Francis Alvin George Hamilton, 1912-?, was born in Kenora, Ontario. He trained at the Normal School in Saskatoon, and taught from 1931 to 1937. He married Constance Beulah Florence Major of Saskatchewan in 1936, and they had two sons, Robert Alexander and William Alvin. He obtained a BA from the University of Saskatchewan in 1937. He was provincial organizer for the Saskatchewan Progressive Conservatives, 1948-1957, and leader of the party in Saskatchewan, 1949-1957. He ran, unsuccessfully, in the 1945, 1949 and 1953 federal elections, and in the 1948, 1952 and 1956 provincial elections. He was first elected to the House of Commons in 1957. He was Minister of Northern Affairs and National Resources in the Diefenbaker cabinet, 1957-1959, and the Minister of Agriculture, 1960-1963.

Scope and content
The fonds consists of seven speeches (88 pages) made in western Canada as Minister of Northern Affairs and National Resources. Two deal with northern development and Arctic islands, two with Canada's resources and foreign problems, and three on the government's agricultural policies.
