Biographical history

Born 1944, in Manchester, England, Andrea Spalding studied teaching at the Teacher Training College in Derbyshire, England. In 1967, she and her husband, David, immigrated to Edmonton, Alberta. In Edmonton, she worked as a teacher, performer, artists, singer, and author. She also worked in programming for the Heritage and Agricultural Society in Stony Plain, Alberta. Andrea Spalding is most widely known for her literary achievements. Andrea co-wrote a television series entitled "Through Western Eyes", as well as wrote scripts for the television program: "Storytime." Storytime ran nationally for five years. In addition, Storytime involved collaborative performances with David. David and Andrea also performed as the folkduo "Brandywine." Brandywine produced two audio cassettes: "Breakfast with Brandywine" (1980), and "The Most Beautiful Kite in the World" (1988). Over the years, David and Andrea also partnered on numerous literary endeavors. Andrea Spalding received numerous awards throughout her literary career. She was nominated for the Manitoba Young Readers Choice, and the Tiny TORGI as well as winning an Alberta Culture and Multiculturalism Teleplay Award, and being an ACTRA Award finalist, both 1979, both for screenplay One Way Ticket. In addition, she won the "Best of the West Award", for a docudrama "Our Nearest Neighbor", For Finders Keepers she achieved a Sheila A. Egoff Children's Literature Prize finalist, West Coast Book Society, Violet Downey Book Award finalist, Canada Chapter of the International Order of the Daughters of the Empire, and Silver Birch Award finalist. The Canadian Children's Book Centre also listed The Most Beautiful Kite in the World, Finders Keepers, and A World of Stories as "Our Choice" selections. Andrea Spalding has been a member of the following organizations: Canadian Society of Children's Authors, Illustrators and Performers (CANSCAIP), Children's Writers and Illustrators of British Columbia (CWILL), Federation of B.C. Writers. After living in Edmonton for 24 years, David and Andrea Spalding moved to Pender Island, BC. The two currently operate the Arbutus Retreat Bed and Breakfast. Andrea Spalding donated the material in 1976 to the Provincial Archives of Alberta. The provenance of the material prior to 1976 is unknown.

Scope and content

The fonds reflects Andrea Spalding's activities with the Heritage and Agriculture Society in Stony Plain at the Multicultural Heritage Centre. The fonds consists of 5 photographs of individuals and the Stony Plain area dating from [1895-1915].
