Biographical history

Annie Gale, 1877-1970, was born in England and settled in Calgary, Alberta in 1912. She founded the Consumer's League and the Women's Ratepayers Association of Calgary. She served on Calgary City Council from 1918 to 1923, being the first woman alderman in the British Commonwealth. She sat on the Calgary School Board from 1924 to 1925. She and her husband, William John Gale, 1867-1939, had two sons, William Esteyn, 1905-1987,and Henry Longhurst, 1902-1973. In 1983 Annie Gale School in Calgary was named in her honour. Scope and content

The fonds consists of newsclippings, miscellaneous letters and a speech (1917-1960), and photographs of Annie, City officials and a ladies' cricket team (1914-1922), correspondence with her husband, genealogical records and research notes.
