Biographical history
Archibald Edwin Smith, 1890-1976, was born in Kensington, England and joined the Royal North-West Mounted Police (RNWMP) in 1913. After training in Regina he was stationed in Alberta, at Coutts, Lethbridge, Pendant d'Oreille, Coalhurst, Milk River and Taber. He moved to Nanton in 1917 where he became a member of the Alberta Provincial Police, and then back to Coutts. In 1919 he re-joined the RNWMP and later served at Creston, British Columbia from 1922-1926 while taking extension courses towards a law degree. He received his degree in 1933 but remained with the police until 1942. He then worked for the Fire Underwriters Investigation Bureau in Saskatchewan, and from 1946-1949 ran the Triannen Ball Room in Regina. He retired to Victoria. He married Margaret J. Henderson in 1916 and they had at least one child.

Scope and content
The fonds consists of photographs of police activities in southern Alberta and British Columbia; and his reminiscent articles regarding his career in the RNWMP, APP and RCMP.
