Name of creator
Armin Hecht was born in 1937 in Hamburg, Germany. He learned photography in Germany as a teenager. Hecht immigrated to Ottawa in 1958, and studied journalism at Carleton. He moved to Lethbridge after completing his degree and worked for the Lethbridge Herald as a writer and a photographer. In 1962, the Edmonton Journal hired Hecht as a writer and photographer. During his career with the Edmonton Journal in the 1960's, Hecht traveled to the Yukon, Europe, Japan, and throughout Alberta. In the 1960's he also freelanced for the Globe and Mail. In 1977, he began freelancing full-time. From 1979 to 1984, he worked as a reporter and cameraman for CFRN. In 1985, he published a book on Prince Rupert entitled Prince Rupert: a Northwest Passage for Prairie Grain (Edmonton: Westglen Publications, 1985). Armin Hecht passed away in 2002.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of photographs, negatives, and slides Armin Hecht took while on assignment from the Edmonton Journal dating from 1950s to the 1960s. Locations include: Alberta, Yukon, Europe, Eastern Canada, and Japan. The fonds also includes some publications of Armin Hecht's reporting dating from 1959-1987.
The fonds also includes 96 photographs, 31 negatives, and 846 slides.
Immediate source of acquisition
In 1990, Armin Hecht donated the material to Provincial Archives of Alberta in 1990.
