Biographical history
Arthur G. Graves, 1877-1973, was born in Lincoln, England and came to Calgary in 1897. He worked in the mechanical department of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR). In 1905 he was elected alderman for Ward 3, and in 1909 was appointed city commissioner. He was elected by a large majority for the same position in 1912. During his years as city commissioner, 1905-1932, he drew upon his engineering experience and was mainly involved in public utilities. He was responsible for developing Calgary's electric street lighting system and was involved in the development of Glenmore dam. After leaving politics he worked for several oil companies including McDougall-Segur Exploration Company, and Alberta Pacific Consolidated Oils. He retired in 1960.
