Biografie

Arthur Edmund Hughes (1890-1980) was born in England, moved to Canada at an early age and worked on farms in Alberta and Manitoba. He served overseas with the Canadian Army in world War I and following that, was with the Army of Occupation in Europe. Arthur came to Jasper in the early 1920's. He worked with A.O. Wheeler on the Alberta/British Columbia boundary survey, and then eventually set up his own outfitting business with Stan Kitchen. He spent some of winters on the Hutchison Ranch at Cochrane, where he met and courted Isabel Annie Skinner (1899-1980). They were married on June 5, 1929 in Calgary and went on to live in Jasper. They lived in a log cabin at the back of 207 Bonhomme Street until their new house was built on that lot. Art and Isabel had two children: Janet (Jan) born March 1930 and Henry (Bud) born March 1931. Arthur's outfitting business came to an end in the dirty thirty's. He then worked for the Government (now Parks Canada) for years at various jobs and eventually went to work for C.N. Express. In 1949 the family moved to Madden, north of Cochrane to be with Isabel's brother, George Skinner.
