Biographical history

Arthur Schumacher was born in 1904 in Trout Creek, Ontario. His family moved to western Canada when he was a boy settling in Nanton and then moving to Athabasca. In 1939 he married Muriel Smallwood, a school teacher, the daughter of Harry and Adeline (Shank) Smallwood. They had 6 children: Divana, Garry, James, Joseph, Howard and Catherine. Art also had 3 children from a previous marriage: Marie, Ron and Tommy. Art was well-known as a good bush pilot, as was his brother, Erwin. Art died in 1968 in British Columbia.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of photographs of Art Schumacher, Pat Keegan, airplanes, Baptiste Lake, Athabasca United Church, Athabasca Brick School, and views of Athabasca in the 1960s. Erwin Schumacher wrote to the Athabasca Baseball Club in 1933 offering to do airobatic feats for money.
