Biographical history
The Association of Women Lawyers (AWL) was established in 1994 by a steering committee of 13 Calgary women lawyers. It was the successor to the Calgary Women Lawyers Association, established in the 1960s by retired Justice Mary M. Hetherington. The mission statement of the organization stated that it was "committed to promoting the advancement, equality, interests and well being of women in the legal profession." The inaugural luncheon in June 1994 featured the Honorable Anne McLellan and Dean Sheilah Martin of the University of Calgary Law School as guests of honour. In its first year, the AWL grew to over 250 members.
The organization has subsequently promoted the advancement of women lawyers and provided support and networking opportunities, and addressed issues facing female lawyers such as pay and promotion equity. Along with organizing educational and professional development seminars and workshops, the AWL also provides a variety of social events to members. Guest speakers have included the Honourable Alan Rock and Chief Justice Beverly McLauchlin.
Membership in the AWL also is open to men, with A. Webster Macdonald Jr. QC welcomed as the first male member.
