Biographical history

The Athabasca Heritage Society was formed in February, 1998 with a mission to promote the cultural and historical heritage of the Athabasca region. Some of the first committees were fundraising, interpretive signage, interpretive centre, aboriginal displays and heritage programs. A 100th anniversary booklet about the overland route to the Klondike was prepared in 1998. In 1999 a plot of land on the riverfront was purchased from the town. A site planning workshop for this plot was held October 15, 1999. Also in 1999, an application for funding was made to the Canada Millenium Partnership Program. Maxine Winder was the president in 1999; Mark Neaves in 2000.
