Biographical history

Austin de B. Winter, 1882-1964, was born in England, the son of W. Roland Winter and his wife Lydia M. Case, ?-1939, and studied law in London. He came to Calgary, Alberta in 1903 and was the deputy clerk of the Supreme Court until 1910. He was admitted to the Bar in 1909 and in 1910 went into partnership with W.P. Taylor. He joined the Clarke and McCarthy law firm in 1913 and the Macleod, Robertson and Smith law firm in 1921. In the early 1930s he opened his own firm and continued to practice as a lawyer until 1952. In 1911 he married Grace Leavenworth Jaynes, 1885-1978, and they had two children, Laurence A., 1918-2011, and Grace (Cloakey), ?-1982. His great interest was game conservation, and he was responsible for introducing Hungarian partridges (also known as grey partridge) to Alberta in 1908, and Chinese ringneck pheasants in 1928. He was an active member of the Alberta Fish and Game Association and served as secretary for many years.

Custodial history
