Notice biographique
Herbert Albert Barnes and his wife Eleanor (nee Lokier) initially resided in England. The marriage produced a son, John Henry, born February 27, 1891. John Henry Barnes, also known as "Jack", came to Canada in 1911. In 1916 he joined the Canadian Mounted Rifles and served overseas. After WWI, Jack applied for a Soldier's Settlement Loan and used it toward the purchase of horses and tools. Under the Soldier's Settlement Board, he was given a quarter section of land. In 1930, John Henry Barnes married Olla Mildred (nee Tinney), daughter of Thomas Henry Tinney (1865- 1941) and Betsy Ann (nee Tinney) (1865-1935). John was employed with the Medicine Hat Post Office for many years; wife Olla, was trained as a school teacher, having taught locally at Irvine and at Elm Street Elementary in Medicine Hat. The Barnes' had two children; Herbert Albert (1935), and a daughter, whose name is unknown at this time (1933). Olla Tinney's family owned a cattle ranch, known as the IV Ranch which was located north of Medicine Hat in the "British Block". Previously, the Tinney's were located in the Feldman Lake area. Mr. Tinney was a second year graduate of the Guelph Agricultural School and specialized in livestock judging, doctoring and breeding throughout the area. He was among the first agriculturalists to introduce Galloway Cattle and Clydesdale Horses to the area. Following the expropriation of lands located within the "British Block", the Tinney family came to live in Medicine Hat, where their children could receive an education.
