Biographical history
Holden Local No. 17 of the Alberta Teachers' Association was created on November 27, 1937 in Holden, Alberta, located in the County of Beaver No. 9. The local was composed of an Executive Council which included a president, vice-president, past president, and secretary treasurer. It also had five sub-locals located in Viking, Bruce, Holden, Ryley, and Tofield. In September 1962 the name of the local was changed to Beaver Local No. 17.
Custodial history
Mrs. Shirley E. Ronaghan, daughter of J.R. Hemphill, deposited accession PR1983.143 in the Provincial Archives of Alberta on behalf of J.R. Hemphill in 1983. Mr. Allen Ronaghan, son-in-law of J.R. Hemphill, deposited accession PR1984.353 in the Archives on behalf of J.R. Hemphill in 1984. Mr. J.R. Hemphill was the Secretary-Treasurer of the Alberta Teachers' Association Beaver Local No. 17.
Scope and content
Sous-fonds consists of the business records of Alberta Teachers' Association Beaver Local No. 17 and includes minutes of annual general meetings and various committee meetings, financial records, correspondence, teacher lists, salary schedules, collective bargaining records, Alberta Teachers' Association minutes and notices, and a photograph. The sous-fonds has been divided into the following series: Series I: Beaver Local No. 17 Minutes; Series II: Alberta Teachers' Association Meeting Minutes and Notices; Series III: Special Committees; Series IV: Correspondence; Series V: Salary Schedules and Collective Bargaining; Series VI: General.

When received, the business records of the Alberta Teachers' Association Beaver Local No. 17 were mixed in with the personal records of J. R. Hemphill. The records have been divided into separate fonds but some overlap may still exist. Groups of records which contain records from both the Alberta Teachers' Association and J.R. Hemphill, and records which are unidentifiable as one or the other will be assumed part of the Alberta Teachers' Association Beaver Local No. 17 sous-fonds.
