Biographical history
Shmuel Berkov (1863-1943) and his wife Elke (1865-1943) came to Canada from Surzah, Cheniuk, Ukraine in 1912. They settled in Calgary, and ten years later moved to Edmonton. Their children were Sonia, Abe and Harry. Abe was a member of the University of Alberta's first graduating class in law. Harry graduated in medicine and moved to Calgary, where he married Sybil Lax. Sonia married Sol Levine and moved to Washington, D.C. Shmuel was the shammus of Beth Israel Synagogue and gave Hebrew lessons. In 1928, Abe (1900-1985) married Gertie Wyman, (1904-1996), daughter of Abraham(1884-1950) and Mary Wyman (1886-1960) from the Kaminits-Podolsk area of Russia. They had two sons, Syd, who became a lawyer, and Ron, who became a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Alberta. Gertie worked as a bookkeeper for her father and lawyer husband, and was active in the National Council of Jewish Women and Hadassah-WIZO. Syd married Eleanor Rayman of Calgary; Ron married Marcia Stark of Los Angeles. They both still reside in Edmonton.
