Biographical history
Bernard H.J. Thoms, 1905-1972, was born in Scotland. He trained as an engineer before joining the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve in 1925. During the Second World War he built and repaired anti-submarine defences for the Royal Navy. He was promoted to Commander in 1943. After demobilization in 1946 he moved to Canada. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy in Ottawa, 1952-1956, chiefly preparing specifications for naval and aircraft fuels and lubricants. From 1956 to 1971 he worked for the Department of Northern Affairs and Natural Resources in Calgary, Alberta as the Oil Conservation Engineer. He was involved in promoting oil and gas exploration in Canada's north (Yukon, NWT, arctic). He and his wife, Cynthia, 1909-2008, a long time Glenbow Museum employee, retired to Victoria, British Columbia in 1972.

Scope and content
The fonds consists of correspondence, certificates, transcript of interview, articles, addresses, and reports, pertaining to his naval and oil engineer careers. Includes study of the Trans Alaska Pipeline System.
