Biographical history

Mr. Bertie C. (Charles) Hart was born in Dorset, England on May 22, 1891. He married in 1914 and had five children, sons James, William, Thomas, and Albert, and a daughter, Joan. He immigrated to the Athabasca region in Alberta ca. 1925 and acquired a homestead in the Meanook district from the Soldier Settlement Board of Canada. Hart possessed approximately 100 cultivated acres and farmed until 1935 when he signed a quitclaim and the family moved to a rented property. After 1935, Hart worked in construction, farming, shearing, and as a Weed Inspector of the Municipal District (MD) of Nelson No. 638 during the summers. In 1940 Hart bought another property and in 1944 he was appointed Assessor and Welfare Officer for the MD of Nelson No. 638. In 1948 he was appointed Assessor and Welfare Officer for MD of Athabasca No. 103, and in 1959, he was appointed in the same position for County of Athabasca No. 12. He retired in December 1966. Hart held membership with of the Alberta Assessors' Association (AAA) and was awarded the Canadian Centennial Medal. He died ca. 1985.

Scope and content

Fonds consists of accounts and minutes of the Rural Municipality of Nelson No.638 and the Soldiers' Home Property Register. Also includes notes, historical sketches, and reminiscences written by Bernie C. Hart about various people and places in the County of Athabasca No. 12, including such diverse topics as pioneer histories, the Alberta Social Credit Party, grain elevators, bulls, oil development, municipal elections, fencing, school districts, and Hart's experiences while working as an assessor.

In 1969, J.E. Cook donated PR1969.0270 to the Provincial Archives of Alberta. J.E. Cook's relationship to Bertie C. Hart is unknown. In 1969, Mr. Bertie C. Hart donated PR1969.306 to the Provincial Archives of Alberta, and in 1970, he donated PR1970.0463 to the Provincial Archives of Alberta. Mr. Hart originally acquired accession PR1969.306 from the County Office of the Municipal District of Nelson No. 638.
