Biographical history

Expansion of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod ministry in eastern Edmonton led to a planned congregation opening in Ottewell in 1960 under the leadership of candidate Louis Scholl. He held services in Holyrood School from December 1960. The congregation chose the name Bethel at their organizational meeting in 1961 and they began to build their first church which was dedicated in December. By 1967 the rapidly growing congregation was self-supporting. In 1969 they started a Kindergarten in the church and by 1973 were more than ready to expand into their new Fellowship and Education wing. In 1981 their constitution was revised. The congregation joined the newly formed Lutheran Church-Canada synod in 1988. In April of 1997 Bethel deconsecrated their facilities in Edmonton in anticipation of a new facility being built in Sherwood Park. Their Edmonton location was taken over by the Ahmaidiyya Movement of Islam. Their new church in Serwood Park was dedicated in May 2000.
