Biographical history

William Robinson Haynes, 1865-1936, came to Calgary, Alberta in 1885 as an Anglican missionary on the Peigan Reserve at Brockett, Alberta. In 1890 he married Elizabeth Edwards, 1866-1944, at Medicine Hat, Alberta and then went to the Blackfoot Reserve at Gleichen to teach. The Haynes had one daughter, Gertrude Mary Margaret Robinson Haynes, 1892-1978, who grew up on the Blackfoot Reserve. In 1915, she married William J. Betts, 1885- ?, who was farm superintendent on the Blood Reserve near Cardston, Alberta until about the 1950s. They had four children, William Arthur Betts, 1920-2003, Margaret (Watkins), Florence B. (White), and Eva (Riddle). William Arthur Betts attended Olds Agricultural College from 1937 to 1939. In 1939 he trained as a pilot and served overseas during the Second World War. He returned in 1941 to teach for the Commonwealth Air Training Plan at Medicine Hat, Alberta, North Battleford, Saskatchewan, and Neepawa, Manitoba before going back overseas from 1943 to 1945. He rejoined the airforce in 1946 and was with the 435 Squadron in Edmonton. He left in 1952 to farm; later joining the Department of Indian Affairs. He married Tannis Betts in 1947.

The fonds consists of photocopies of William and Gertrude's birth, baptism and marriage certificates; obituary for Elizabeth Haynes; letter to Gertrude (Haynes) Betts from J.W. Tims regarding the death of her mother; and articles on Cannon H.W.G. Stocken. Includes photographs of First Nations, North West Mounted Police (NWMP) posts, and Fort Macleod pioneers; photographs of W.R. Haynes and family and Peigan Reserve; photographs of William J. and Gertrude (Haynes) Betts and family and Blood Reserve; photographs of William Arthur Betts and views taken while an instructor with the Commonwealth Air Training Plan; views of 1937 Cardston Parade; 1939 Royal Visit; and 1941 dedication of a cairn at Stand Off.
