Biographical history

Charles Cathmer Ross, 1884-1938, was born in Ottawa, Ontario. He attended Lisgar Collegiate there prior to entering McGill University. He was very active in sports at university. He graduated with a BSc and worked for the International Boundary Survey and Hydrographic Survey. He was in private practice as a contractor from 1911 to 1913. In 1916 he came to Calgary, Alberta as senior mining inspector and later as supervisory engineer for the Department of the Interior. In 1931 he left the government to engage in the oil business as a consultant. In 1935 he was appointed Minister of Lands and Mines in the Social Credit Government, a position he held until 1937. He was an active member of the Engineering Institute of Canada. He and his wife had two sons, John and William.

The fonds consists of C.C. Ross' lantern slides of the oil industry in Alberta; and a microfilm of a scrapbook regarding Charles' sports and political activities, and John's sports activities.
