Biographical history
The Calgary Trades and Labour Council was organized on February 19, 1901, and included stonemasons, carpenters, leather craftsmen, printers, moulders, and blacksmiths. The Council was formed for the purpose of voicing the needs and aspirations of labour, legislative and otherwise. Its objects were to establish friendly relations among all sections of the working class, to foster and strengthen existing unions and organize unorganized workers, and to affect satisfactory settlement of disputes between labour organizations or between employer and employee. Many delegates of the council also served on the City of Calgary Council, civic boards, and represented labour in local educational, cultural and social service organizations. By the 1950s, over sixty unions were represented and this number remained constant thereafter. In 1956 the Calgary Trades and Labour Council joined the Calgary Labour Council under the latter's name. The name was changed to Calgary and District Labour Council in 1992 to avoid confusion with the Canadian Labour Congress when acronyms were used. The Council is affiliated with the Canadian Labour Congress, the Alberta Federation of Labour and other local labour councils.
