Biographical history

The Citizens' Committee for the Physically Handicapped grew out of a public meeting held at the Kinsmen's Centre in Calgary, Alberta on April 16, 1972. The Committee was elected to survey and study the needs of the physically handicapped in Calgary by means of questionnaires, interviews and discussions, and to prepare a brief. James Douglas Walker served as recording secretary for the committee. The brief, presented in June of 1972, was the basis for changing the building code, inaugurating handi-buses, and improving transportation and access to buildings for the physically handicapped.
