Biographical history

The Imperial Bank of Canada opened a branch in Athabasca, AB on January 24, 1907. It burned in Jan. 1912 and a new two-storey building was opened in 1913. A sub-branch was located in Colinton, AB from 1919-1924, and 1954-1970. The Canadian Bank of Commerce had a branch in Athabasca from March 5, 1912 to April 30, 1917. In 1961 these two institutions amalgamated to form the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce.

The Bank of Canada (incorporated 1858) became the Bank of Commerce in 1867. It absorbed smaller banks, beginning with the Gore Bank in 1869 and ending with the Standard Bank of Canada in 1928. The bank's name was changed to Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce in 1961 after the merger with the Imperial Bank of Canada. Function: The Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce provides commercial and personal banking services in Canada and overseas.
