Name of creator
The Canadian Institute of Resources Law was incorporated in September of 1979 to undertake and to promote research, education, and publication on the law relating to Canada's renewable and non-renewable natural resources. Funding to establish the Institute was provided by a grant from the Alberta Law Foundation. The University of Calgary provides the Institute with office accommodation and some support services. The objectives of the Institute are a) to contribute to a better understanding of how legal systems and laws deal with natural resources, to analyze whether such laws accomplish their policy objectives, and to propose reforms; b) to analyze the techniques by which resources policies are developed and implemented, to assess the appropriateness of such techniques, and to make suitable recommendations; c) to disseminate the results of the Institute's research through educational activities and publications; d) to complement the responsibilities of existing legal education institutions by providing a pool of expertise in resouces law. As well as contributing to the work of governments, universities, the legal profession and private industry, the Institute assists the public by undertaking and disseminating studies which present balanced, well-researched views of the legal problems involved in the management of resources. The Institute maintains close liaison, and cooperates with other organizations and groups active in resources law. These include the Canadian Petroleum Law Foundation, the Centre for Natural Resources Law at The University of Melbourne (Australia), and the Centre for Petroleum and Mineral Law Studies at the University of Dundee (Scotland) among others.
