Biographical history
The Institute was established in 1976 to encourage research and publications in Ukrainian studies; to serve as a resource centre for English-Ukrainian bilingual education; and to encourage contacts among scholars and students in Ukrainian studies through seminars and conferences. The Institute offers no courses or degree programs (Calendar, 1990/91). At the time of its formation the Institute reported to the Dean of Interdisciplinary Studies; it now is under the Vice-President (Research). The following units and projects are supported: the Archive on Contemporary Ukraine, the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies Press, the Encyclopedia of Ukraine, the Journal of Ukrainian Studies, the Peter Jacyk Centre for Ukrainian Historical Research, the Stasiuk Programme for the Study of Contemporary Ukraine, and the Ukrainian Language Education Centre. Directors: 1976-1986 Manoly R. Lupul; 1986- Bohdan Krawchenko; 1991-1992 Frank E. Sysyn (Acting).

III Conferences, seminars (1977-1986). Includes announcements; programs. IV Newspapers (1856, 1925-1988). Master microfilm copies of Ukrainian newspapers not available in Canada, collected from European archives and libraries. Reference copies are in the University Libraryþs micromaterials collection. V Programs (1977-[1989]). Includes bilingual program, 1977-1979; outlines of programs, 1978-1986. VI Publications (1977-[1989]). Includes correspondence with publishers; original watercolour illustrations by Henricus C.J.M. Zyp for children's books. VII Research (1896-1983). Includes lists of projects approved and rejected, and collections acquired for research and reference: B. Lewytzkyji's publications, 1941-1980; B.Z. Kazymyra's collection of copies of documents pertaining to emigration, 1896-1914 (Guide, 1979); L.Y. Luciuk's collection of microfilmed documents of the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain, [1945-1952] and of Dr. J. Makoweckyj's collection, 1939-1964 (Guide, 1982); I. Tesla's collection of copies of documents on internment camps, 1914-1918 (Guide, 1977). VIII Scholarships, fellowships (1976-[1989]). IX Shevchenko lecture (1977-1986).
