Administrative history

The Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) was incorporated in 1881 to build a rail line to the Pacific coast. Land for the right-of-way for the main line and branch lines was purchased from thousands of individuals in the Canadian West. The land office was originally located in Winnipeg, Manitoba but moved to Calgary, Alberta about 1912. Responsibility for land sales was transferred to Marathon Realty in 1962. Marathon was sold in 1996 but these legacy records were left in the hands of the CPR.

Custodial history

These records were salvaged by Jim Scott and Scott Jolliffe from CPR offices in Calgary when they were scheduled for destruction by the company about 2003. About 2006 they were given to Doug Phillips of Calgary.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of 3400 case files of land transactions relating to the building of branch lines across the Canadian West, particularly in Manitoba. Also consists of plans of railway stations and their grounds; "title record" plans recording the names of individual land owners throughout the west; ledgers of townsite land sales, primarily in Alberta and British Columbia; and ledgers of land leases in western Canadian communities, including Winnipeg Beach, Manitoba.
