Fonds MG 473 - Carscallen, Lapp family fonds

Stanley Newton "Stan" Carscallen, 1876-1943, was born in Dresden, Ontario and educated in both Dresden and Chatham. He taught school for several years before going into the hardware business with his father. He moved to Red Deer, Alberta in 1903 in order to open up a hardware business. In the following year he became a partner of Edward Michener in the large real estate, mortgage and insurance agency later known as Michener, Carscallen & Chadsey. In 1904 he married Mary Belle "Molly" Bond, 1876-1961. They had three children: Alan, Beth (Fowler), and Eula (Lapp). Stan was a Red Deer alderman, 1910-1913, and mayor in 1914. The family left Red Deer in 1917 after the financial collapse of Michener, Carscallen & Chadsey. Stan then worked as an insurance agent in Medicine Hat and later in Calgary. In 1933 he and his family moved to Sylvan Lake where he started the real estate and insurance firm Carscallen Agencies. Stan and Molly are buried in the Red Deer Cemetery. Eula Lapp, 1905-1991, was born and educated in Red Deer, before attending the Calgary Normal School. She taught school in the Calgary region for several years. In 1933 she married Gordon Lapp, 1905-1998, a lay member of the Religious Education Council of Canada, who later became a Doctor of Divinity and an ordained minister in the United Church of Canada.
