Biographical history

Catherine Garvey has a background in education and she has volunteered for more than 30 years on projects supporting women's rights. She was an active member and spoke person of the Alberta Status of Women Action Committee, and she was in 1976 chairperson of the Advisory Committee on Equality aiming at elimination of discrimination in the school system in Alberta. She was also in 1975-1976 a leader for the Edmonton Catholic Schools Committee on Women. This committee was established in 1975, in the International Women's Year, to study the inequalities existing in school practices between men and women, to make known the role of women in the school system and also to develop programs bringing a better understanding of issues attached to the equality of both sexes. Catherine Garvey lives in Edmonton.

The fonds was deposited at the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 2008.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of records which have been created in the process of running the Edmonton Catholic Schools Committee on Women. They include reports, correspondence, brochures and articles on women and stereotypes.
