Biographical history

Catherine McLean (nee McCauley) immigrated to Edmonton, North-West Territories, now Alberta, from Burks Falls, Ontario in 1892 with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel McCauley, and her four siblings. Samuel McCauley was a ferry operator and contractor in Edmonton, and a brother of Matthew McCauley, Mayor of Edmonton from 1892-1894, and Jim McCauley, a trapper who worked for the Hudson's Bay Company on Holman Island, North-West Territories. Catherine McLean attended the McKay Avenue School, and in 1904 took a business course at Alberta College. In 1905 she worked as a stenographer in the law offices of Taylor, Boyle and Gariepy, and after Boyle and Gariepy were elected as members of the Alberta Legislative Assembly, McLean worked as a secretary to the Members in the Survey Branch of the Public Works Department. She worked off and on in this position until she married James Colin McLean on April 12, 1910, and they moved to a homestead, likely in the Irma, Alberta area. Together they had two daughters, Jean and Betty and in 1943 they built a house in Irma. James McLean died in 1949.

Custodial history
