Biographical history

In 1891 the Roman Catholic missionaries built a dwelling house/storage shed at Athabasca Landing to serve their missions at Grouard and elsewhere. Bishops Clut, Grouard and Breynat all passed through Athabasca Landing. In Sept. 1905 Rev.Father Patrick Beaudry, OMI, was placed in charge of the mission. Ten lots were purchased from the Hudson's Bay Co. and a 48x26 ft. church was erected in 1906 named St.Gabriel's. Rev.Father A.Desmarais succeeded Father Beaudry in 1909 and doubled the size of the church building. He divided his time between the town and the surrounding district including St.Bruno's Church east of Colinton, built in 1912; St.Catherine's Church built in Colinton in 1935 and St.Anthony's Church built in the Grosmont-Lahaieville district in 1939. He retired in 1936. St.Gabriel's Church burned in the spring of 1953 and was rebuilt in less than six months. This parish was in the St. Albert diocese until Nov. 30, 1920 when the St. Albert diocese was incorporated into the Edmonton diocese. The Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI) served the parish. In 1941 the Athabasca Parish was transfered to the new Diocese of St.Paul and was served by the Redemptorist priests.
