Biographical history
The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) established a manning depot near Penhold, Alberta in 1940. In 1941 it was assigned to the Royal Air Force (of Great Britain) under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, and became known as No. 36 Service Flying Training School. In 1944 the base was returned to Canadian command, but it was only used as a communications station. In 1952 it was reactivated as RCAF Station Penhold. From 1953 to 1964 it was again used as a flying school. It was also used as a radar base, cadet training camp, and air defence command school; it was also the site of a bunker for the protection of civilian authorities in case of an aerial attack. With the unification of the Canadian Armed Forces in 1968 it was renamed CFB Penhold (Canadian Forces Base Penhold). In 1992 its status was changed, and it became CFB Edmonton, Detachment Penhold. In 1994 it was closed
