Biographical history

Charles Albert Parker, the third of seven children, was born in Birmingham, England in 1883 to Isobelle and George Parker. When he was 18 he emigrated to Canada, spending time in the Moose Jaw area. By 1912 he had moved to Athabasca and worked for Rennison Brothers store. During WW I, in 1917, he was injured at Ypres by poisonous gas. He married Barbara V. Dick, 1888-1972, and, back in Athabasca, opened the Empire Store in the Leng Block. Mr. Parker bought the Hudson's Bay Co. store when it closed in 1924 naming his business Parker's Store. For some years he operated the adjacent garage named Pioneer Garage. He operated the store until 1965. He was a member of the town council, Royal Canadian Legion, Chamber of Commerce, All Saints Anglican Church, and the masonic lodge. During WW II he was director of the War Bond Drive for northern Alberta. He died in 1977. The Parkers had one son, Charles Heming Parker, who taught school in Athabasca from 1969-1980.
