Biographical history

Charles F. Johnson, ?-1935, was trained as an engineer and mechanic but travelled to the Klondike in 1897 as a prospector. A year later he became an assistant teacher at St. Peter's mission school at the Anglican mission at Hay River, NWT. In 1909 he travelled to Arctic missions with Bishop Isaac O. Stringer and Archdeacon Whittaker. During this journey they became lost and had to eat boot leather in order to survive. For the next ten years he was manager of Chooutla Indian Residential School, Carcross, Yukon, and then for seven years was principal of St. Paul's Hostel, Dawson City, Yukon. In 1933 he was ordained a deacon. He was married and had at least one child, Mrs. G.W. Rusler.
